History and Background

ZBrush was developed by Ofer Alon in 1999 and acquired by Maxon in 2002. Its per-pixel brush algorithm and the ability to work with millions of polygons redefined the concept of sculpting in the industry. The GoZ protocol, introduced in 2021, sends sculpts live to Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D and Modo. The 2027.0 release shipped in October 2026 alongside ZBrush for iPad 2027.0; the iPad edition has a free base app with full features at $9.99/month or $89.99/year. Version 2027.0 brought a new UV Editor together with UDIM and trim-sheet support.

Strengths

  • The industry standard for organic character and creature design, the foundation of film VFX and game assets.
  • PolyPaint allows painting directly on the model with no UV layout.
  • The GoZ protocol sends sculpts to other DCCs live, with no re-import step.
  • More than 200 proprietary brushes handle fine texture detail that nothing else matches.

What You Should Know

  • Annual subscription is mandatory; there is no perpetual license.
  • Retopology and UV unwrapping are harder than in conventional tools, so work usually moves to another application.
  • Very heavy polygon counts can strain cards with limited VRAM.

Who Is It For?

Character and creature designers, VFX studios, game asset artists and 3D printing enthusiasts.
