History and Background
Modo was founded by Luxology in 1992 and acquired by Foundry in 2012. Its procedural mesh modeling tools, Quad Draw and Edge Flow, together with a strong subdivision surface workflow, made it a sector standard for hard-surface concept design. However, on 7 November 2024 Foundry announced it was winding down Modo development, stating that no significant feature release had been made for at least two years. Maintenance and subscription customers received a ten-year EOL license, and in 2025 Foundry published that license file publicly, so Modo 17.1v1 can now be downloaded free. Wikipedia now lists Modo among defunct 3D software.
Strengths
- Procedural mesh modeling and topology tools that remain unmatched for hard-surface design.
- A strong subdivision surface workflow.
- The OctaneRender for Modo Prime plug-in ships with it.
- A ten-year EOL license for maintenance and subscription customers, valid until 7 November 2034.
What You Should Know
- Development has ended: no updates, no bug fixes and no support.
- Building new pipelines around the tool carries risk.
- Community and plug-in support will fade, so a mid-term migration plan is required.
Who Is It For?
Hard-surface designers who want to keep an existing Modo workflow running – but look for alternatives for new projects.
