History and Background
Godot Engine was started by Juan Linietsky in 2014 as a one-person project and released as a 2D game engine. The 4.0 release in 2023 was a major rewrite that added 3D support. Because of the MIT license, game studios can use it without paying; support is funded entirely by voluntary donations. The 4.7.2 release shipped in August 2026. Console support is provided through third-party publishers, a concrete example of how an open-source engine can be extended to commercial platforms without giving up the source.
Strengths
- The MIT license means no royalty and no revenue cap, so project cost is predictable.
- A genuine 2D engine: true 2D pixel coordinates and 2D nodes rather than scaled 3D.
- GDScript, C# and C++ through GDExtension coexist in one project.
- First-class OpenXR and WebXR support.
- Genuinely open development: everyone who contributes benefits equally from everyone else’s contributions.
What You Should Know
- Console ports depend on third-party publishers and can carry a fee.
- C# support covers desktop and mobile only.
- The ready-made plug-in and tool ecosystem is not yet as broad as Unity’s or Unreal’s for large studio teams.
Who Is It For?
Indie developers, open-source-friendly studios, education projects and XR prototype teams.
