History and Background

KeyShot was founded by Luxion in 2010. The founders noticed that Autodesk was selling KeyShot as a licensed product inside SolidWorks, so they set up their own independent company and continued developing it. The core idea was to take product visualization out of the “render engine” category and turn it into an application designed for the purpose: you do not have to build a 3ds Max or Maya scene, you import the model and start lighting it. The 2026.2 release shipped in June 2026 with Apple GPU support, and the same period introduced a cloud rendering service.

Strengths

  • No DCC scene setup required: import the model and start lighting immediately.
  • Built-in AI modes – Restyle, Background and Imagine – produce quick concept variations.
  • The Material Graph provides procedural texturing with more than 1,500 ready materials.
  • Physical caustics and global illumination, with Apple GPU support from 2026.2.

What You Should Know

  • Annual subscription of $1,299 (Professional) or $1,599 (Business).
  • Less flexible than V-Ray or Arnold for cinematic film quality.
  • For complex scene animation, a different render engine is usually chosen.

Who Is It For?

Teams producing product visualization for manufacturing, retail and e-commerce.
