History and Background

Unity was founded in 2004 by three Danish entrepreneurs and produced the independent game engine market with its first Mac OS X release in 2005. When the iPhone App Store opened in 2008, Unity’s mobile market share exploded; after 2010, as Unity3D, it became one of the most widely used game engines in the world. Unity’s runtime fee model of 2022 drew heavy backlash; in 2024 the fee was removed and the company returned to a subscription model. Unity 6 added dedicated XR and industry plans for automotive and manufacturing.

Strengths

  • C# scripting with a huge Asset Store and Package Manager ecosystem makes team standardization easy.
  • URP and HDRP allow different graphics quality tiers in the same project.
  • The 2D tilemap workflow works with true 2D pixel coordinates.
  • Cross-platform deployment: mobile, console, web, VR and Vision Pro.

What You Should Know

  • Above $200,000 in revenue the Pro plan becomes mandatory at $2,310 per year.
  • Some file formats, notably Cinema 4D files, are not supported natively.
  • Proprietary formats such as Maya, Blender and 3ds Max require the source DCC installed for import.

Who Is It For?

Indie game developers, XR training and simulation teams, and automotive and product visualization teams.
