History and Background
Its ancestor, 3D Studio, was written by the Yost Group for MS-DOS and published by Autodesk in 1990. After Release 4 the program was rewritten for Windows NT and shipped as 3D Studio MAX in April 1996 under Kinetix, Autodesk’s multimedia division. After Autodesk bought Discreet Logic in 1998-1999 the product was branded “3ds max”, and when the Discreet brand was retired in 2005 it took its current name, Autodesk 3ds Max.

Strengths
- The most proven plug-in and asset ecosystem in architectural visualization.
- A deep non-destructive modifier stack that saves real time on complex design iterations.
- Arnold, V-Ray and Corona can be driven from the same scene.
- MAXScript and the Work Graph allow studios to build their own shared tool sets.
What You Should Know
- Windows only; there is no macOS or Linux build.
- The $2,010 annual subscription carries an Indie tier, but the revenue threshold is narrow.
- Scene performance degrades as the modifier stack deepens, so disciplined modeling is required.
Who Is It For?
Architects, interior designers, game environment artists and product visualization studios.
