History and Background
Maya 1.0 was released in February 1998 by Alias|Wavefront, the division Silicon Graphics formed after buying Alias Research and Wavefront Technologies in 1995. It quickly became a default tool for film animation and visual effects. Autodesk acquired Alias in 2006 and has developed and sold Maya ever since.

Strengths
- The DAG scene architecture plus MEL and Python scripting give unmatched depth for studio automation.
- Bifrost visual programming handles fluids, smoke and particle simulations inside Maya.
- Native USD support keeps file exchange predictable in very large production pipelines.
- The most mature corporate training and certification program of any DCC.
What You Should Know
- Subscription only (monthly, yearly or 3-year terms); perpetual licenses are no longer sold.
- The sheer breadth of the tool set makes the learning curve steep and the interface look rough to newcomers.
- Hardware requirements are high; mid-range laptops will not run it comfortably.
Who Is It For?
Film and television studios, AAA game companies and VFX production teams.
