History and Background

SculptGL was written by Stéphane Ginier around 2014 as a small WebGL sculptor that runs in the browser. In a few thousand lines of JavaScript it brought real-time dynamic topology, voxel remeshing and symmetry into a browser tab. The application served as the prototype for the considerably more capable mobile successor, Nomad Sculpt. On 17 January 2026 the repository was archived by its owner; the README states “DEVELOPMENT STOPPED – I’m now working on Nomad Sculpt instead”. Because it is an external codebase, it still runs today but you should not expect new features.

Strengths

  • No installation, no account and no royalty: as simple as a browser tab.
  • Real-time dynamic topology and SurfaceNets voxel remeshing.
  • The MIT license also permits commercial use.
  • Direct 3D-print-ready mesh output in OBJ, PLY and STL.

What You Should Know

  • Development has stopped and the project is archived; do not expect bug fixes or new features.
  • There is no real-time rendering, so an external program is needed to work on the print mesh.
  • Layer, UV and material support is very limited.

Who Is It For?

Students and makers who want to try sculpting immediately with no installation.
