History and Background
Cinema 4D was released in 1993 by the German software company Maxon and became After Effects’ closest competitor in motion graphics. The MoGraph module (Cloner, Fields, Effectors) arrived with the 4.x series in 2009 and quickly became a broadcast-commercial standard. The 2027.0 release shipped in October 2026. Maxon has assembled a single software family around Cinema 4D, ZBrush and Redshift, which means sculpting and rendering can run under the same license. Version 2027.0 introduced the Scatter Generator, Liquid FX and a Scene Nodes based MCP server.
Strengths
- One of the shortest learning curves in motion graphics, with an easy transition from After Effects.
- MoGraph and the field system generate procedural animation from a single control.
- Redshift brings GPU rendering that is integrated with the real-time preview.
- ZBrush, Cinema 4D and Redshift are converging under one Maxon license.
What You Should Know
- Annual subscription is mandatory, which complicates long-term license planning for organizations.
- The 2027.0 release requires Windows 11 or macOS 15 or newer.
- Modeling and simulation depth does not match Maya or Houdini.
Who Is It For?
