Having avenged his clan on the mystical island of Lin Fen, Armakuni—the Last Ninja—is meditatively training when a rip in the space-time fabric hurls him centuries forward into 1980s New York City. The evil occult shogun Kunitoki has also reincarnated, embedding himself as an untouchable syndicate kingpin controlling the skyscrapers and underground criminal syndicates of Manhattan.
Combining intricate isometric exploration, martial arts combat, and puzzle-solving, Last Ninja 2 tasks players with surviving seven diverse New York districts, including Central Park, the gritty street alleyways, sewer tunnels, the subway transit network, and Kunitoki's heavily guarded corporate penthouse. Armakuni can fight bare-handed or utilize found weaponry: ninja swords, wooden staff, nunchaku, shurikens, and smoke bombs.
System 3 delivered an unmatched visual spectacle using detailed multi-color isometric tilemaps with subtle environmental animations (fountains, falling leaves, traffic). Matt Gray's funk-infused, rhythmically driving SID score perfectly bridged feudal Japanese motifs with modern 1980s synth-pop, delivering an unforgettable sonic journey across every district.
Joystick Port 2: Directional movement relative to isometric plane. Fire + Direction performs attacks (punch, high kick, sword slash, staff sweep). Space bar toggles between collected inventory items.
Last Ninja 2 was a gargantuan commercial smash hit across Europe, winning Zzap!64's coveted Gold Medal (94%) and solidifying System 3's reputation as the masters of cinematic action-adventures.
