Twenty years ago, a sentient purple meteor crashed near the secluded Victorian estate of the Edison family. Now, mad scientist Dr. Fred has abducted cheerleader Sandy to drain her brain for his experiments. Her brave boyfriend Dave Miller gathers two high school classmates to break into the mansion, outwit the bizarre Edison family, and rescue Sandy.
Created by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, Maniac Mansion introduced the world to SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion). Players assemble a three-person team from six unique teenagers (each with distinct talents: Bernard repairs electronics, Razor plays rock music, Syd plays piano, Wendy writes novels, Michael develops photos). The game features multiple non-linear solutions, cutscenes, and no unwinnable dead-ends.
The pioneering SCUMM engine allowed high-level adventure scripting with dynamic mouse or joystick pointer control, eliminating tedious text parsers forever. David Lawrence and Chris Grigg scored quirky, character-specific musical themes for each playable teen.
Joystick Port 2: Move cursor across verb commands (Open, Close, Give, Read, Pick Up) and screen objects; Fire to click and execute actions.
A revolutionary landmark in gaming history that created the blueprint for LucasArts' golden adventure game era and inspired an entire generation of storytelling.
