📖 STORY & PREMISE

The high-tech mechanized military colony of Katakis has been seized by a runaway biological computer virus that re-engineered the defense systems into bio-mechanical horrors. Piloting the experimental DS-H7 fighter craft, you must penetrate 12 hostile sectors—from orbital battlements to bio-organic digestive hives—to purge the central core.

🎮 GAMEPLAY MECHANICS & SECRETS

Katakis took inspiration from Irem's arcade hit R-Type but infused it with blazing European pacing. The centerpiece of combat is the detachable satellite pod: it can be mounted to the front or rear of your ship, or detached to float freely and soak up enemy projectile fire. Weapons include multi-directional laser beams, wave cannons, homing missiles, and reflective plasma pulses.

⚡ TECHNICAL WIZARDRY & MOS 6581 SID SOUNDTRACK

Developed by Manfred Trenz and Factor 5, Katakis showcased impossibly fast 50 FPS scrolling and gigantic multi-screen mechanical bosses. Chris Hülsbeck composed an electrifying 12-track soundtrack that made extensive use of SID volume envelopes and filter sweeps to replicate futuristic synthesizers.

🕹️ CONTROLS & JOYSTICK CONFIGURATION

Joystick Port 2: 8-way navigation, Fire to Shoot, Hold Fire to Charge Plasma Beam, Space bar / Secondary button to detach or recall the defensive satellite pod.

🏆 HISTORICAL LEGACY & CRITICAL ACCLAIM

Katakis firmly put German development studio Factor 5 on the world map. After legal negotiations with Irem over R-Type likenesses, Factor 5 was hired to code the official C64 conversion of R-Type itself!
